Brooklyn Funk Essentials

Brooklyn Funk Essentials, formed in 1993 in the United States of America, was conceived by producer Arthur Baker and bassist Lati Kronlund, who served as musical director. The collective’s early work emerged with the 1994 EP The Creator Has A Masterplan, followed by the 1995 album Cool and Steady and Easy, which featured an underground hit cover of Pharoah Sanders’ The Creator Has a Master Plan. Subsequent releases-In the BuzzBag (1998), Make Them Like It (2000), Watcha Playin' (2008), and Funk Ain’t Ova (2015)-expanded the group’s blend of jazz, funk, and hip‑hop, incorporating collaborations with Turkish clarinettist Hüsnü Şenlendirici and artists such as Joi Cardwell and Yuka Honda. The collective maintained a presence on the New York club circuit throughout the 1990s and 2000s, achieving cult status within underground circles and releasing subsequent albums Stay Good (2019) and Intuition (2023). In 2026, they returned with the Black Butterfly EP, followed by the album of the same name.
