Bright Eyes

Many see Conor Oberst, lead singer and essential member of this "fake" folk-rock band, as a worthy descendant of Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen, or at any rate as one of the most brilliant exponents of Americana. He is one of the most prolific songwriters of the 2000s. Having cut his teeth in a first band called Commander Venus, which ended in 1997, the guitarist and singer, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, decided to launch a new project entitled Bright Eyes. A debut album was released in 1998. Entitled A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997, it featured 20 tracks recorded over the previous three years by the singer, but received little critical acclaim at the time. A series of albums and EPs followed, including Fevers and Mirrors (2000) and I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (2005). In 2006, Bright Eyes became a trio with regular collaborator Mike Mogis (guitar, keyboards, bass) and Nate Walcott (keyboards, trumpet, accordion, arrangements). This line-up recorded the acclaimed Cassadaga (2007), which consolidated Bright Eyes' place on the American indie rock scene. In 2011, however, after the release of The People's Key, the band seemed to be marking time, especially as Conor Oberst decided to devote the following years to other projects, such as a duo album with Phoebe Bridgers in 2019. But just when it seemed that the adventure was finally over, Bright Eyes resurfaced in 2020 with the release of a tenth album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, followed four years later by Five Dice, All Threes. The following year saw the release of the Kids Table EP, featuring Hurray for the Riff Raff on one track.
