Named after a species of butterfly, the American band Black Moth Super Rainbow (BMSR) was formed in 2001 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Seven Fields of Aphelion (keyboards), Pony Diver (synthesizers), Steve SLV (bass) and Iffernaut (drums) surround singer and producer Thomas Ec aka Tobacco. Their unique blend of neo-psychedelic rock, lo-fi electronica, synthpop and ambient resulted in the compilation Falling Through a Field (2003), followed by the albums Start a People (2004), The House of Apples and Eyeballs (2006), Dandelium Gum (2007), Eating Us (2009) and Cobra Juicy (2012). The band, known for their psychedelic stage performances, also plays at numerous festivals. Back in between Tobacco's solo projects, BMSR reunited for the album Panic Blooms (2018), followed by the remixes of Panic Fades (2019). Their eighth studio album, Soft New Magic Dream, was released in 2025.
