Biosphere

Geir Jenssen, born 30 May 1962 in Tromsø, Norway, is a Norwegian electronic musician and producer best known for his ambient work under the moniker Biosphere. After acquiring his first synthesizer in 1983, Jenssen released the cassette‑only E‑Man in 1984 and later joined the synth trio Bel Canto, contributing to White‑Out Conditions and Birds of Passage before departing in 1990 to pursue a solo career. His debut as Biosphere came with the single "The Fairy Tale" and the album Microgravity, issued by Origo Sound in 1991 and later reissued by R&S Records in 1992. The 1994 release Patashnik expanded his audience and featured the track "Novelty Waves", which entered the UK singles chart at Number 51. In 1997, the album Substrata was released on All Saints Records. Subsequent albums include Cirque, Shenzhou, Autour de la Lune, and Dropsonde, while collaborations with Pete Namlook (Fires of Ork) and various film scores (e.g., Insomnia) broadened his portfolio. Jenssen has performed at European festivals and released live recordings such as Wireless: Live at the Arnolfini, Bristol. His work has continued to influence the ambient genre, with recent releases like Shortwave Memories, Substrata (Alternative Versions), and The Way Of Time (2025).
