French harmonica player Benoît Blue Boy is one of the pioneers of the genre in France. As early as the 1970s, he set out to understand and feel blues and Cajun music. He decided to sing blues in French thanks to a meeting with Zachary Richard. In 1978, Benoît Blue Boy had one of his songs featured in the juxe-boxes that were still in vogue at the time. Benoît Blue Boy never benefited from widespread media exposure, nor indeed from the support of a major record company. Remaining confidential, his career is all the more admirable for having released albums that truly ooze the blues. Vendeur de Blues (1981), Parlez-vous Français? (1990), Maux d'Absence (2004) and Micmac (2006) are all excellent records. Some of his albums are recorded with the group Les Tortilleurs, with 2010's Funky Aloo falling into this category.
