Born Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed on 27 January 1996 in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria, Bella Shmurda is an Afrobeats singer and songwriter whose rise to fame has been characterised by his unique blend of Afrobeat, street-hop, and his distinct storytelling style. Known for his energetic performances, relatable lyrics, and the ability to connect with audiences, Bella Shmurda has become one of the prominent voices in the new wave of Nigerian music. He was exposed to music at a young age and quickly developed an interest in various genres, particularly Afrobeat and the evolving sounds of Nigerian street music. His stage name, Shmurda, is a playful nod to his street-smart persona, and he adopted the Bella moniker, inspired by his desire to always stay fresh and fashionable. He began recording music in 2016, but it was not until 2018 that he gained significant attention after releasing his breakthrough single, "Vision 2020". The song's relatable lyrics, combined with his deep voice and vibrant delivery, caught the attention of music lovers across Nigeria and beyond. However, his career skyrocketed in 2020 with the release of his hit single "Cash App", which became an anthem and solidified his place in the Nigerian music scene. His subsequent single, "Dangbana Orisa", further cemented his status as one of the most promising artists of his generation. His debut EP, High Tension (2020), received positive reviews for its well-crafted production and relatable themes. The album featured a mixture of uptempo hits and slow jams, showcasing his versatility. Tracks like "Hustle", "Ginger Me", and "Lovestruck" stood out and made him a household name in Nigeria. He followed up with the High Tension 2.0 EP (2021), which included chart-topping tracks like "World", "Philo", and "So Cold." His debut studio album, Hypertension, arrived in 2022, with several other EPs and singles having since been released, including 2024 EP R2 Sept 12 and 2025's "Dangbana Riddim" with FOLA.
