Backxwash

Real name Ashanti Mutinta, Zambian-Canadian rapper Backxwash was born in Lusaka, Zambia, on October 4, 1991. Based in Montreal, her style is a cross between rap and industrial music, and she has made a name for herself through the social themes of her lyrics, linking sexual identity, religion and politics. After the self-released EP F.R.E.A.K.S (2018) and album Deviancy (2019), Backxwash asserts her personality in God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It (2020), awarded the prestigious Polar Music Prize. Still on the shortlist, its successor I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses (2021) is darker and more personal. While two of her tracks appear in the Work in Progress series, the rapper signs the final part of her trilogy with His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering (2022), oscillating between phases of chaos and melancholy. The critically acclaimed Only Dust Remains followed in 2025.
