Athena

Athena, a Turkish ska‑punk group formed in Istanbul, emerged from twin brothers Gökhan and Hakan Özoğuz, born 11 October 1976, who began collaborating musically in 1987. Their early experimentation in thrash metal led to the 1993 unofficial demo One Last Breath, followed by the first formal studio album Holigan in 1998, which established their blend of Turkish lyrics, oriental motifs, and Oi! influences. The band’s breakthrough came with the 2000 album Tam Zamanı Şimdi and the 2001 single "12 Dev Adam", released to support the Turkish national basketball team. In 2004 Athena represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest with "For Real", achieving fourth place and 195 points, the highest score for the country at that time, and securing a five‑week presence on the German singles chart. The group continued to release Us (2004), the self‑titled Athena (2005), and the EP İt (2006), which included a Turkish cover of Nirvana’s Breed. Later works included Pis (2010) and Altüst (2014). Throughout its career, Athena received multiple Altın Kelebek and Kral Türkiye awards, cementing its role in popularizing ska‑punk within Turkey.
