Artie Shaw And His Gramercy Five

Artie Shaw and His Gramercy Five was an American jazz ensemble led by Artie Shaw, active from 1940 to 1954. Formed after Shaw returned from Mexico in 1940, the group initially consisted of a sextet from his orchestra members for studio recordings. Their debut session for Victor Records on September 3, 1940, produced hits like "Special Delivery Stomp" and "Summit Ridge Drive", the latter reaching number 10 on the US charts in January 1941. Notable recordings include "My Blue Heaven" (1941) and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (1941). Shaw disbanded the group briefly in 1941 but reformed it in 1945 with a stronger lineup, including Roy Eldridge on trumpet. The Gramercy Five continued to record until 1954, with notable sessions for Decca Records in 1950 and 1951.
