Anthony Joseph and The Spasm Band

Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band was a UK-based musical group led by Trinidadian poet, novelist, and lecturer Anthony Joseph. Formed in London in 2005 as an offshoot of Joseph's novel-in-progress The African Origins of UFOs, the band drew influences from free jazz, Afro-Caribbean funk, spoken word, soca, rapso, calypso, rock, and Spiritual Baptist rhythms. Their debut album, Leggo de Lion, was released in April 2007 by Kindred Spirits, followed by extensive European tours including performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. In March 2008, they recorded their second album, Bird Head Son, which featured guest performers such as Keziah Jones and Joseph Bowie. The album was released in January 2009 by Naive/Heavenly Sweetness and accompanied by a poetry collection of the same name. Their third album, Rubber Orchestras, was released in October 2011 and named Jazz/World album of the year by Les Inrocks magazine.
