Anonymous 4

Anonymous 4 was an American a cappella quartet from New York City that formed in 1986. The ensemble originally consisted of Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, Ruth Cunningham, and Johanna Maria Rose. They were famous for their interpretations of medieval music and ancient chants, though they also premiered contemporary works such as the Steve Reich composition “Know What Is Above You” (1999). They released their debut studio album, An English Ladymass, (1992) through the label Harmonia Mundi, with whom they maintained a long-term recording association. Their discography includes the successful recordings On Yoolis Night (1993), Hildegard von Bingen – 11,000 Virgins (1997), and American Angels (2004). The group collaborated with diverse musical acts, including the Chilingirian Quartet on Darkness into Light (2003) and The Mountain Goats on Transcendental Youth (2012). Their final studio recording, 1865, was released (2015) and featured Civil War-era songs performed with Bruce Molsky. After a thirty-year career, the quartet disbanded following the 2015–2016 season.
