Alex Cline

Alex Cline is an American jazz drummer born in the United States in 1956. Cline began playing drums at age 11 with twin brother Nels Cline in the band Homogenized Goo. In 1976, they formed Duo Infinity with Jamil Shabaka. Cline became a member of Vinny Golia's group and the Julius Hemphill Trio in 1977. Their ensembles include the trio Spiral (1977) and Quartet Music (1979). Cline's discography as a leader includes the solo debut Not Alone (1981) and their first album as a bandleader-composer, The Lamp and the Star (1989). As leader of The Alex Cline Ensemble, they released the albums Sparks Fly Upward (1999) and The Constant Flame (2001). Subsequent recordings include Continuation (2008), For People in Sorrow (2013), and Dependent Origination (2018). Collaborations include work with Gregg Bendian, Tim Berne, and Henry Kaiser
