Akira Sakata is a Japanese free jazz saxophonist and film composer who was born in 1945 in Kure. He formed his first group, SaibÅ-bunretsu, in Tokyo and joined the YÅsuke Yamashita trio in 1972, where he performed until 1979. He collaborated with the Jam Rice Sextet and joined the formation Last Exit (1986). Sakata released albums including Dance (1981) and Mooko (1988), which featured Bill Laswell on bass and violin. During the 2000s, he toured with ensembles including Harpacticoida and Kesutoradamashi and collaborated with DJ Krush.
