Accept

As a legendary heavy metal band, Accept paved the way for speed and thrash metal in the 1980s with their mix of blistering tempos, powerful guitar riffs, and electrifying intensity; the group continued to release critically acclaimed albums well into the 21st century. Accept was founded in 1976 in Solingen, West Germany, and released its self-titled debut album three years later. Although the band’s lineup was marked by personnel changes from the very beginning, a core group of musicians emerged within Accept, including singer Udo Dirkschneider, guitarist Wolf Hoffmann, bassist Peter Baltes, and drummer Stefan Kaufmann. All four members contributed to Restless and Wild in 1982, the band’s first album to chart in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Sweden (where it reached No. 7). However, it was the 1983 release “Balls to the Wall” that officially established Accept as an internationally renowned band. The album was a moderate success in Germany and Sweden but went gold in both the U.S. and Canada, with the title track becoming an anthem of the heavy metal genre. “Metal Heart” from 1985 and “Russian Roulette” from 1986 further solidified the band’s mainstream success, but progress stalled in 1987 when Dirkschneider left the band to launch a successful solo project: U.D.O. In the 1990s, he returned to Accept’s lineup—a decade in which the band released albums such as “Objection Overruled” from 1993 (a Top 40 hit in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland) and “Predator” from 1996. After a 14-year hiatus, Accept reformed with new frontman Mark Tornillo and ushered in the band’s most successful era to date with 2010’s “Blood of the Nations” in 2010. “Blind Rage” followed in 2014 and reached No. 1 in Germany, No. 1 in Finland, No. 9 in Switzerland, and No. 35 in the U.S. The 2017 release The Rise of Chaos marked the final appearance of the band’s longtime bassist, Peter Baltes, while the 2021 release Too Mean to Die introduced a new lineup that included guitar hero Philip Shouse. “Humanoid” followed in 2024 and enjoyed international success: It reached No. 5 in Germany, No. 6 in Switzerland, No. 57 in Japan, and No. 7 on the UK Rock & Metal Charts. In early September 2026, Accept released the compilation Teutonic Titans 1976–2026. The album reached No. 3 in Germany and also made the Top 10 in Austria (No. 5) and Switzerland (No. 7).
