Outside the metal scene, 22-pistepirkko is one of the few Finnish bands to have achieved international recognition. Formed in 1979 in Utajärvi by brothers PK and Asko Keränen (vocals/guitar/keyboards and keyboard/programming/bass respectively), the trio also includes drummer Espe Haverinen. After a debut album in Finnish, Piano, Rumpu ja Kukka, released in 1984, the band switched to English on The Kings of Hong Kong (1987), followed by Bare Bone Nest (1989). In 1992, Big Lupu broke away from the revivalist rock'n'roll and garage rock world and adopted a more psychedelic style. This enabled 22-Pistepirkko to gain international recognition and perform outside their home country. The band subsequently diversified into electro, lo-fi and experimental genres. After a break in 2015, the three musicians reunited to record the album Kind Hearts Have a Run Run in 2022.
